Fr. Kevin Mullen, OFM
After attending high school at St. Joseph’s Seraphic Seminary in Callicoon, N.Y., and college at Siena College in Loudonville, N.Y., Fr. Kevin was received into the Franciscan Order in 1975. He entered the novitiate at St. Francis Friary, Brookline, Mass., professing temporary vows in 1976. Fr. Kevin made his solemn profession in 1979 and was assigned to Assumption of Our Blessed Lady Church in Wood-Ridge, N.J., for his deaconship before he was ordained in 1980. In addition to his degree from Siena, he holds a master’s in divinity degree from the Washington Theological Union.
In 1982, he moved from Assumption Parish to Holy Name College in Washington, where he studied for his doctorate in moral theology from The Catholic University of America in Washington. Five years later, he moved to Christ the King Seminary in East Aurora, N.Y., where he served as vicar and instructor until 1990. In 1987, Fr. Kevin was elected to the Siena College Board of Trustees, serving a three-year term. Kevin has since taught at Pope John XXIII National Seminary in Weston, Mass., Weston School of Theology in Cambridge, Mass., Emmanuel College in Boston, Felician College in Lodi, N.J., the Franciscan Institute at St. Bonaventure University, Allegany, N.Y., and the Washington Theological Union.
While at Christ the King Seminary, he was a member of the ethics committee of Sisters’ Hospital in Buffalo, N.Y. In 1990, he was appointed rector and guardian of St. Anthony Shrine, Boston, one of the province’s largest ministries. During that time, he was elected a Provincial Councilor, serving from 1990 to 1999.
While in Boston, Fr. Kevin chaired the board of directors of St. Francis House, recognized by Boston’s religious and business leaders as a model for providing services to the homeless and marginalized. He also was on the board of directors of Franciscan Children’s Hospital from 1997 to 1999 and the steering committee for the Interfaith Clergy Breakfast from 1990 to 1999.
In 1999, he became pastor of St. Leo’s Parish in Elmwood Park, N.J., ministering there until 2002. That year, he was re-elected to the Provincial Council, serving from 2002 to 2007.
Fr. Kevin moved to Siena College in 2005 as guardian of the friar community and director of the Franciscan Center for Service and Advocacy. He served in both positions until his election as president of Siena College in 2007. In 2008, he was re-elected to the Provincial Council for another three-year term.
At the Provincial Chapter of 2014, Fr. Kevin was elected as the 16th Provincial Minister of Holy Name Province. To accept the position, he resigned as president of Siena College. He now serves on the St. Bonaventure University Board of Trustees and is president-elect of the English-speaking Conference of the Order of Friars Minor.
