Francis de Sales Maroney

1923 – 1997

Br. Francis de Sales Maroney, OFM, was born in New York City on March 4, 1923. He was affiliated to the Order on Jan. 2, 1941, received into the Province’s novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary in Paterson, N.J., July 17, 1944. He professed vows as a perpetual tertiary on July 26, 1945.

Thereafter, his life was a model of stability, since he served in only three friaries until his retirement from active duty in 1980. He was assigned to St. Patrick’s in Buffalo, N.Y., for five years, St. Stephen Friary in Croghan, N.Y., for two, then 28 at St. Joseph’s in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.

He did general work around these friaries, but in Wilkes-Barre, he is best remembered for his congenial service as friary porter and receptionist. Br. Francis retired in 1980 to St. Anthony Friary in St. Petersburg, Fla. By 1985, he required more specialized care and moved to St. Francis Gardens in Albuquerque, N.M.

His later years were spent there in pleasant retirement, greeted and loved by little children of the neighborhood. Br. Francis de Sales died in Albuquerque on July 2, 1997. He was 74 years old. For 56 years he was an affiliate of the Franciscan Order, almost 52 years as a perpetual tertiary.
