Eusebius Schlingmann

1869 – 1937

Fr. Eusebius Schlingmann, OFM, was born Jan. 19, 1869 in Delbrueck, Germany. He was received into the Order on the Frauenberg, in Fulda, in 1888, professing temporary vows one year later. He arrived in America as a simply professed friar and continued his studies at the novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary, Paterson, N.J. He made his solemn profession in 1892 and was ordained in 1893.

He did pastoral ministry in Croghan, N.Y., and Butler, East Rutherford and Rochelle Park, N.J. For eight years, he served as pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in New York City. The greater part of his priestly ministry was spent in Denver, where he was known as a pioneer and a church-builder.

He died there on Jan. 30, 1937. Fr. Eusebius was 68 years old, a professed friar for 47 years and a priest for 43 years.
