Brian Boyle

1911 – 1988

Fr. Brian Boyle, OFM, was born in Malden, Mass., on Dec. 1, 1911. He worked in his family’s florist business for a number of years before entering the friars. He went to St. Joseph’s Seraphic Seminary in Callicoon, N.Y., at the age of 27, graduated after four years and was received into the Province’s novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary in Paterson, N.J., Aug. 12, 1942.

He professed temporary vows Aug. 13, 1943, and made his profession of solemn vows Sept. 17, 1946. Fr. Brian was ordained a priest June 12, 1948.

His first three years were spent at St. Anthony Shrine in Boston. In 1952, he was assigned to St. Anne’s Parish in Fair Lawn, N.J. He also served at St. Joseph’s Parish in East Rutherford, N.J., St. Francis’ in Brookline, Mass., and St. Raphael’s in Lafayette, N.J.

In 1967, Fr. Brian went to Paterson, where he served local hospitals in Hoboken, Teaneck and Montclair. He was devoted to the Secular Franciscans in the area.

Fr, Brian was a thoughtful and caring friar toward the sick and infirm, even during his own illness. He died in Warwick, N.Y., on July 1, 1988. He was 76 years old, a professed friar for 44 years and a priest for 40 years.
