Benedict Boeing, OFM

Benedict Boeing

1870 – 1920

Fr. Benedict Boeing, OFM, was born in Borken, Germany, on Aug. 11, 1870. He entered the novitiate in Fulda on Jan. 1, 1888, and professed temporary vows Jan. 6, 1889. He came to the United States, most probably to Paterson, N.J., with the Fulda friars.

Since Paterson did not have a program of studies at that time, Fr. Benedict pursued his studies in theology with the Sacred Heart Province. He made his profession of solemn vows on Jan. 7, 1892, and was ordained a priest in St. Louis, Mo., on June 30, 1894.

After his ordination, Fr. Benedict joined the Paterson community and was an excellent professor of theology and an outstanding preacher of the Word. He was a member of the Provincial Council from 1910 to 1916.

Fr. Benedict died in Newark, N.J., on July 3, 1920. He was almost 50 years old, a professed friar for 31 years and a priest for 26 years.
