On Saturday, two Holy Name Province friars will be among the 10 men who will profess their first vows as Franciscans at a service at the interprovincial novitiate in Burlington, Wis.
They are New York City native John Aherne, OFM, and Jeffrey Upshaw, OFM, of Somerville, N.J. Provincial Minister John O’Connor, OFM, will accept the vows of these former novices.
In the coming weeks, several other Holy Name Province members will reach milestones in their Franciscan journeys.
On Aug. 15, five HNP friars will be among the 17 men being received into the interprovincial novitiate at another ceremony at the same location. They are Dennis Bennett, Casey Cole, Sergio Ferrisi, Edgardo Jara Araya and Ramoncito Razon. Provincial Vicar, Dominic Monti, OFM, will represent Holy Name Province.
On Aug. 25, four friars — Frank Critch, OFM, Mario Gomez-Tejerina, OFM, Percy Osorio-Palpan, OFM, and Edgardo Zea-Laura, OFM — will profess their final vows as Franciscans. All are welcome to the Saturday morning Mass at St. Francis of Assisi Church in New York City. In September, Frank will be ordained a deacon in his hometown of St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada, and on Nov. 3, he will be ordained a priest at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Triangle, Va.
Last week, Edgardo Zea and Mario returned from Italy where they participated in a month-long solemn vows pilgrimage-retreat with friars from other U.S. provinces. The pilgrimage-retreat was an interprovincial effort, organized by the Franciscan Pilgrimage programs in Franklin, Wis., according to Dominic. Frank and Percy are making other arrangements for their retreats.
