SYBERTSVILLE, Pa. — A three-day “Christ the Good Shepherd” icon workshop for beginners is being offered next week at Holy Dormition Friary. It is the first of several events at the friary affiliated with Assumption BVM Province. The workshop will be held Sept. 6 to 9 at a cost of $200, and includes all materials and luncheons on Friday and Saturday.

The workshop will be led by Marylyn Barone, who gives icon programs in parishes across Pennsylvania and New Jersey, according to a flyer that was distributed recently. Another icon workshop, called “Mother of God Icon Workshop” with Valentin Streltsov, is scheduled for Oct. 18 to 21.

Other events scheduled for the friary in rural Pennsylvania include a “Parables: Riddles for Life Bible Study” on Sept. 13, a day of recollection on Sept. 15, and a used book sale on Sept. 29.

Holy Dormition Friary, home of the Byzantine Franciscans, is on Highway 93, within one mile of Interstate Rt. 80 in central Pennsylvania.

Information about the events is available from Fr. Jerome Wolbert, OFM, assistant program director, at holydormition@gmail.com or 570-788-1212 ext. 402. News about the friars and programs of Holy Dormition Friary can be found on their Facebook page.

The Byzantines offer two venues for retreats and conferences. Emmaus Hall is used for group conferences, and Clare House is meant for private retreats with access to the grounds and chapel.

In addition to daily Mass, the complex, established in the 1940s, offers a variety of amenities and activities including faith-sharing communities and guest houses. Holy Dormition is on 80 acres at the foothills of the Poconos, according to an article in the Oct. 13, 2011, issue of SJB News Notes, the publication of St. John the Baptist Province.
