Last month, St. Camillus Parish outside Washington, D.C., began a six-month initiative honoring St. Oscar Romero, who was made a saint in October 2018. The idea for “Walking with Romeo” was conceived by Javier Del Angel De los Santos, OFM, who wanted to find a way to honor the late archbishop and to involve members of the parish community in formation, advocacy and artistic activities. On Dec. 3, three friars opened the initiative by reading the official prayer in three languages – English, French and Spanish. An event called A Night of Martyrs is being planned for March 23.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — On Oct. 14, 2018, Pope Francis canonized the Archbishop of San Salvador, Monsignor Oscar Arnulfo Romero Galdamez, along with six other blessed including Pope Paul VI. The word “canonization” comes from the Latin “canon” which means “list.” A Christian-Catholic person is “canonized” when he or she is officially included in the official “list” of saints of the Catholic Church. With the canonization of Oscar Romero, the Church has officially recognized at least four things: the sanctity of life, the orthodoxy of teaching, the prophetic legacy and the martyrdom for the cause of faith and justice of Oscar Romero. The main reason for a person to be canonized is that he/she has practiced in an outstanding or heroic way the love for God through the love of others with concrete works, as Oscar Romero did. In this way, the Church has officially and universally proposed Oscar Romero life and teachings as a model for the faithful and has authorized to celebrate him with the public liturgical worship that corresponds.
Oscar Romero was a complex, multifaceted, and passionate human being. He was very loved and very hated both inside and outside of the church, in life and after his death. Those who knew him in person and those who have heard or read about him, remember him for two things: he was a prophet and a martyr.
Prophet and Martyr
“Prophet” literally means “to speak on behalf of someone” and not, as is normally thought, a person who reads or predicts the future. Oscar Romero was a prophet in every sense of the word because he spoke both in the name of God and in the name of the people the church had entrusted to him. In fact, Oscar Romero was a skilled and creative communicator who used all the means at hand, at a time when the internet did not still exist. He denounced the abuse, injustice, oppression, persecution, torture and death that the Salvadoran people was suffering.
Oscar Romero spoke, wrote and acted as a witness of the truth of the Gospel, which says that God wants a world where everyone can love one another and create living conditions that allow them to live with dignity, respect, justice, peace and love. This new society is known as the Kingdom of God. Oscar Romero spoke and worked for the establishment of this kingdom.
The word “martyr” means “witness.” Oscar Romero was a martyr, that is, a witness, not only at the time of his death, but during all the time he lived and worked to establish the Kingdom of God by helping to provide just conditions of life for the people of El Salvador.

Walking with St. Oscar Romero at St. Camillus Parish
From Dec. 2, 2018 to June 9, 2019, the entire community of St. Camillus and Langley Park, in Silver Spring, along with the students from St. Francis International School, are living a special time of grace called “Walking with St. Oscar Romero.”
The purpose of this special time is to make known the life, message and work of Oscar Romero to find concrete ways to live the Gospel today, in our time, in our daily life, in our circumstances. We want to pray, reflect and learn based on the life and teachings of Oscar Romero, and, like him, get involved in order to be prophets and witness of the Gospel of Jesus of Nazareth and the Kingdom of God today.
We invite you to read the parish bulletin, and to follow us on Facebook to know about the events and activities of “Walking with Romero” in Spanish, English and French. Finally, let us remember that it was faith and love, not the armed revolution, that impelled Romero in his heroic ministry for the poor and oppressed. The revolution of Romero was the revolution of love and justice, the same one preached by Jesus of Nazareth. Paradoxically, this revolution is the only one capable of destroying violence, death and sin in the world. This was the revolution in which Romero believed, for which he worked and for which he was a prophet and a martyr during his life and with his own life. This is the revolution of love we want to revive during this time of grace for our parish.

Tiempo de gracia: Caminando con San Oscar Romero
El pasado 14 de octubre de 2018 el Papa Francisco canonizó en la Plaza de San Pedro al Arzobispo de San Salvador, Monseñor Oscar Arnulfo Romero Galdámez, junto con otros seis beatos más, entre ellos el Papa Pablo VI. La palabra “canonización” viene del latín “canon” que significa “lista”. Una persona cristiano-católica es “canonizada” cuando es incluida oficialmente en la “lista” de los santos de la Iglesia Católica.
De esta manera, con la canonización de Oscar Romero, la Iglesia ha reconocido oficialmente al menos cuatro cosas: la santidad de vida, la fidelidad de las enseñanzas, el legado profético, y el martirio por causa de la fe y la justicia de Oscar Romero.
El motivo principal para que una persona sea canonizada es que haya practicado de manera sobresaliente o heroica el amor a Dios a través del amor a los demás con obras concretas, tal como lo hizo Oscar Romero. De esta manera, la Iglesia ha propuesto a Oscar Romero como modelo de vida para toda la iglesia universal y ha autorizado que se le rinda el culto litúrgico público que le corresponde.
Oscar Romero fue una persona compleja, polifacética y apasionante. Fue un hombre muy amado y muy odiado tanto dentro como fuera de la iglesia, tanto en vida como después de su muerte. Los que lo conocieron en persona y los que han oído o leído acerca de él, lo recuerdan casi siempre por dos cosas: fue un profeta y un mártir.
Profeta” significa literalmente “hablar en nombre de alguien” y no, como normalmente se piensa, leer o adivinar el futuro. Oscar Romero fue un profeta en toda la extensión de la palabra porque habló tanto en nombre de Dios como en nombre del pueblo que la Iglesia le había confiado.
En efecto, Oscar Romero fue un hábil y creativo comunicador que utilizó todos los medios a su alcance, en una época donde aún no existía el internet, para denunciar el abuso, la injusticia, la opresión, la persecución, la tortura y la muerte que sufría el pueblo salvadoreño.
Oscar Romero habló, escribió y actuó como testigo de la verdad del Evangelio, la que dice que Dios quiere un mundo donde todos se puedan amar unos a otros y crear condiciones de vida que permitan vivir con dignidad, respeto, justicia, paz, y amor. A esta sociedad nueva se le conoce como Reino de Dios. Oscar Romero habló y trabajó por la instauración de este Reino. Y por este ministerio fue que los poderosos lo asesinaron.

La palabra “mártir” significa “testigo.” Oscar Romero fue mártir, es decir, testigo, no sólo en el momento de su muerte sino durante todo el tiempo que vivió y trabajó para instaurar el Reino de Dios, es decir, para ayudar a que hubiera condiciones de vida más justas y humanas para el pueblo salvadoreño.
Por estos motivos, y muchos otros más, del 2 de diciembre de 2018 al 9 de junio de 2019, toda la comunidad de San Camilo y Langley Park, así como la comunidad estudiantil de St. Francis International School, estaremos viviendo un tiempo especial de gracia al que hemos llamado “Caminando con San Oscar Romero” o más simplemente “Caminando con Romero.”
El objetivo de este tiempo especial es dar a conocer la vida, el mensaje y la obra de Oscar Romero para encontrar formas concretas de vivir el Evangelio hoy y aquí, en nuestro tiempo, en nuestra vida cotidiana, en nuestras circunstancias. No queremos quedarnos en la veneración y admiración estéril de un personaje porque eso sería una falsa espiritualidad vacía de sentido. Al contrario, queremos orar, reflexionar y aprender de la vida y las enseñanzas de Oscar Romero para, como él, involucrarnos con lo que pasa a nuestro alrededor y ser mejores profetas y testigos del Evangelio de Jesús de Nazaret y del Reino de Dios hoy.
Te invitamos pues, a estar atento por los medios de comunicación parroquiales sobre todo el boletín parroquial, la página web de San Camilo y Facebook para estar al tanto de los eventos y actividades de este “Caminando con Romero” que tendremos tanto en español, inglés y francés. Finalmente, recordemos que fueron la fe y el amor, no la revolución armada, los que impulsaron a Romero en su heroico ministerio por los destituidos. La revolución de Romero fue la revolución del amor y la justicia, la misma que desató Jesús de Nazaret, la cual es capaz de destruir la violencia, la muerte y el pecado que imperan en el mundo. Ésa fue la revolución en la que Romero creyó, por la que trabajó y por la que fue profeta y mártir, durante su vida y con su propia vida. Esa es la revolución de amor que queremos reavivar con este tiempo de gracia que es “Caminando con Romero.” Te esperamos.
