NEW YORK — Some notable Holy Name events that took place in past Aprils are listed below.

One Year Ago
April 12, 2008 — St. Francis Springs Prayer Center in Stoneville, N.C., directed by Louis Canino, OFM, held its third annual fundraiser. The event included a silent auction, tours of the grounds and a raffle for 20 cash prizes, totaling $25,000. Kevin Downey, OFM, from St. Mary’s Church in Pompton Lakes, N.J., was one of the cash winners.

April 19, 2008 — Fifteen Holy Name friars gathered for Mass with Pope Benedict XVI at St. Patrick’s Cathedral during his visit to New York and Washington. To make it through security checkpoints and secure seats for the first Mass said by a pope in the cathedral, participants arrived at 7 a.m. for the 9:15 a.m. service.

April 19, 2008 — Close to 100 people gathered at the Province’s West 31st Street building in Manhattan for a raffle and silent auction, benefitting Mt. Irenaeus. The event raised $14,000 for the Western New York retreat center, and included Mass celebrated by Daniel Riley, OFM.

April 15, 2004 — Groundbreaking ceremonies were held for the expansion of the De La Roche Science Building at St. Bonaventure University. The $14.9 million addition, now referred to as William F. Walsh Science Center, officially opened for classes in the fall 2008.

10 Years Ago
April 25, 1999 — Washington Theological Union honored Vincent de Paul Cushing, OFM, for his 24 years of service as president of the Union. Today, Vincent is guardian of Gemelli House in Silver Spring, Md., and serves in WTU’s department of systematic and moral theology.

18 Years Ago
April 1, 1991 — The Province opened an urban ministry at St. Paul’s Parish in Wilmington, Del. Today, Todd Carpenter, OFM, is pastor of St. Paul’s.

20 Years Ago
April 7, 1989 — The Provincial Council endorsed a proposal to move the offices and residence for friars in the Provincial Administration to a new location in New York City on West 88th Street. The site was blessed later that year.

22 Years Ago
April 12, 1987 — A new wing to St. Francis Community Center in Brant Beach, N.J., opened.

23 Years Ago
April 9, 1986 — Alban Maguire, OFM,  Provincial Minister from 1980 to 1987, officiated at the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Provincial Infirmary in Ringwood, N.J., which officially opened its doors in January 1989. Today, Holy Name Friary in Ringwood is home to more than 25 friars and is listed as one of the top nursing homes in the country.

50 Years Ago
April 25, 1959 — His Excellency Phillip Hannan, auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., ordained a class of 25 friars of Holy Name Province to the priesthood at the Basilica of Mt. Sepulchre in Washington, D.C. The newly ordained hailed from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Connecticut.  This summer, class members will commemorate their jubilee.
