Sr. Mary Joseph Aspell, OSC

Russel Murray, OFM, has asked the Communications Office to inform the HNP fraternity of the passing of Sr. Mary Joseph Aspell, OSC, a Poor Clare nun for 45 years who died in the early morning hours of Nov. 7 at the Poor Clare Monastery in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts.

“Although her death was sudden, Sr. Mary Joseph died peacefully, sitting in her chair, reports her abbess, Sr. Clare Frances McAvoy,” said Russel. “Let us keep our sister in our prayers.”

Sr. Mary entered the Poor Clare Monastery in 1977 and has been a sister to each of her sisters in community and a vital member of the Order. Her obituary says that she leaves many relatives – including nieces, nephews and cousins – and “friends beyond number” whom she met while working at the monastery’s front desk, answering calls and greeting visitors in person.

“Sister loved to meet new people and be of service to each and everyone,” reads her obituary.

Her funeral Mass was held on the morning of Nov. 12 in the monastery chapel, followed by burial in Mt. Benedict Cemetery in West Roxbury. The Poor Clares hosted a luncheon at the monastery for family, friends, and members of the congregation after the burial.
