ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Holy Name Province friars who are solemnly professed for less than five years gathered here last week for their semi-annual meeting including fraternity and prayer.
This gathering, from April 19 to 21, focused on building peer support among the recently solemnly professed and provided an on-going formation component. The theme of the gathering’s ongoing formation piece dealt with financial responsibility. Dennis Wilsonled the group in a conversation about financial responsibility to the Province, to the United States government, and most importantly, to the vows of the friars, said HNP’s Vocation Director Gregory Jakubowicz, who chaired the event.
The event, nicknamed SPUFY for solemnly professed under five years, was held at St. Anthony’s Friary, a site that serves as a retirement home and meeting center for HNP friars. Thirteen friars attended the gathering including 10 SPUFY friars and two friar mentors, David Hyman and Francis DiSpigno.
The conversation provided some new information for SPUFY friars and also led to animated conversations “about how we live our lives in relationship to our claim of being sons of St. Francis of Assisi,” said Greg, shown in photo.
Greg chose the theme of the gathering and invited the speaker, planned the schedule, and managed other details of the event. Zachary Elliott will chair the next SPUFY gathering, scheduled for October 12 at St. Anthony’s Friary.
