SILVER SPRING, Md. — Men aged 18 and older who would like to learn more about the Friars Minor are invited to attend a Franciscan Vocation Discernment Retreat in Spanish at Holy Name College. Members of the Province’s Hispanic Ministry Committee will lead the retreat.
The Sept. 5 to 7 event is an encore of last year’s retreat, described as “an explosion of faith, fraternity and great joy” and “a smashing success” by attendees. This encuentro is a great opportunity for young men considering a life of prayer, community and service while following the footsteps of St. Francis of Assisi to experience Franciscan life, said Christopher Posch, OFM, chair of the Hispanic Ministry Committee.
Pedro, a Mexican-born participant from Pennsylvania who attended the 2013 retreat, commented joyfully on his experience. “When I came, I didn’t have many expectations… but after these few days, I not only feel I understand the friars’ lives better, but I also feel like I was part of your fraternity as well. I guess it is because you do not separate yourselves from us, but are with us, one of us. That makes all the difference.” Last year’s gathering included natives of nine countries who came from 14 U.S. parishes.
For further information about the retreat or to register, contact Erick Lopez, OFM, at 301-434-8400 or email@example.com. Participants are asked to register by August 1.
Friars and laypeople are encouraged to forward the retreat flyer to those who may be interested in attending.
A reflection on last year’s event was included in the Winter 2012-13 issue of The Anthonian. The retreat is one of several programs organized by the Province’s Hispanic Ministry Committee. In 2009 and 2012, the committee held Encuentro Franciscan events to highlight and celebrate the Latino culture and heritage.
