The Way of St. Francis has established the annual Simon Scanlon Writing Awards in memory of their longtime editor and publisher, Simon Scanlon, OFM. These awards are open to all except for friars and employees of the St. Barbara Province.
Applicants must submit an original essay or feature-length article (1,500-2,000 words). This entry must not have been previously published or presented in any form. The subject can be any theme dealing with the influence and relevance of Franciscan life, spirituality, history, etc., to our world today. The entry must be oriented to a general reading public, and not simply an academic audience. Profiles, essays, poems, human interest stories, interviews, etc., are all acceptable.
Submissions must be typed, double-spaced, with one-inch margins. Entries should be submitted electronically as e-mail attachments. As an alternative form of submission, the text can be typed directly into the body of an e-mail message, but if this method is used The Way will not be responsible for electronic alternations of format and content. Submission will be acknowledged by return e-mail.
Prizes are $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place, and $250 for third place.
Submissions must be made by Oct. 4. All entries will be submitted to a jury, and a decision will be announced by Dec. 15.
Applicants must agree that if their work is selected, it will be published in The Way. The Way will hold exclusive first-time rights in all media, and the winning entries will also be posted to The Way’s Web site.
Interested applicants may send a self-addressed stampted envelope (with four first-class stamps) for a sample copy of The Way. Your request should be mailed to: The Way of St. Francis, 1112 26th St., Sacramento CA 95816-5610.
