LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. — Siena College President Kevin Mullen is planning to lead a pilgrimage to Assisi in February 2009 to mark the 800th anniversary of the founding of the Order of Friars Minor.
From Feb. 18-28, the Siena community will visit Assisi and other points of interest in the Italian countryside.
This trip is in response to the leadership of the Order encouraging Franciscan men and women to gather together in 2009 to celebrate “the grace of our origins.” It was in the year of 1209 that historians estimate that Francis received approval from the Pope for his “form of life.”
“One special and unique way that has been suggested for observing this anniversary is to travel in pilgrimage to Assisi in order to visit the sites and to breathe the air in the very place that gave birth to Francis and his way of life,” wrote Kevin in his invitation to the Siena community.
“I hope you will consider joining me on this pilgrimage to deepen our understanding of the Franciscan tradition, see the amazing Italian countryside, and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow saints.”
