Maria Hayes Friar News

DITTMER, Mo. — Friars are invited to “Our Vocation as Gospel Preachers,” a three-day retreat led by Fr. Wayne Hellmann, OFM Conv. The event will take place from Sept. 26 to 28 at Il Ritiro Franciscan Retreat, staffed by Sacred Heart Province.

During a series of four conferences, Fr. Wayne “will help us reflect on our preaching ministry in the light of our Franciscan Tradition that began with St. Francis of Assisi,” according to the program’s description. Fr. Wayne will also draw on the life and writings of St. Francis as seen through Thomas of Celano, St. Bonaventure, and St. Bernardine of Siena. The schedule also includes significant blocks of time for personal prayer and reflection.

Fr. Wayne, of the Conventual Midwest province, is co-editor of the three-volume series Francis of Assisi — Early Documents. He is a professor of historical theology at St. Louis University and was presented with the Franciscan Institute Medal in 2010 for his contributions to Franciscan scholarship and education.

The cost of the retreat is $165, or $300 for two people, if registered before Sept. 1, after which the cost increases. The $25 registration fee is non-refundable and is applied to the retreat cost. Each participant is provided with his own room.  Those interested in making reservations should call 636-274-0554 or email the retreat center at  More information is included in the event’s registration form.
