“Christ on the Road to Emmaus” by Jan Wildens
LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Luke’s description of one of Jesus’s early resurrection appearances will be at the center of next year’s interprovincial retreat, open to all OFM friars. Fr. Jude Winkler, OFM Conv., will lead “On the Road to Emmaus” from January 4 to 8 at Holy Cross Retreat Center.
Fr. Jude hopes the retreat will help prepare friars for the reconfiguration and renewal of Franciscan life in the United States.
“I would like to examine topics in the Gospel of Luke that we can apply to our Franciscan religious life,” said Jude. “One of the topics that all Franciscans need is the ability to deal with the call to surrender to God’s will as we face huge institutional changes in these years. I think Luke will give us a good platform to discuss that.
“During this week of retreat, we will look at some central themes in the Gospel of Luke that led up to the death and resurrection of Jesus,” he added. “We will examine the three resurrection narratives to help us to identify with the Christian journey outlined in their accounts. We will apply these lessons to the challenges of our life as vowed religious, especially as we journey along a road that leads to our own Emmaus.”
The gathering’s venue is a 45-minute drive from the El Paso, Texas, International Airport where shuttle service is available to the retreat center. Friars from the Albuquerque, N.M., area can offer hospitality and transportation for those who choose to fly into Albuquerque International Sunport.
Retreat organizers ask that registrations be submitted no later than Dec. 21. If participants choose to stay at the retreat house, the event’s cost will be $410. This includes a private room and bathroom, and all meals beginning with a light dinner on Monday and ending with breakfast on Friday morning. The rooms are individually air conditioned and heated.
Those who choose to stay at the Ramada Las Cruces Hotel can expect to pay $485. This includes a private room and bathroom, daily breakfast, and use of the heated indoor swimming pool. All other meals and snacks will be provided at the retreat house.
Checks should be made payable to Friar Retreats and should be sent to P.O. Box 12395 Albuquerque, NM 87195. Those with questions should call Br. Bruce Michalek, OFM, at 505-877-8006.
