HNP Today occasionally suggests publications of interest to friars and their partners-in-ministry. The took books described below, recommended by people associated with Holy Name Province, offer ways for us to develop a deeper spirituality and strengthen relationships with others.

Healing the Future: Personal Recovery from Societal Wounding by Dennis Linn (Paulist Press, 2012) is recommended by James Vacco, OFM, pastor of St. Bonaventure Parish, Allegany, N.Y. The book addresses the toxic aspects of our society and how they affect us personally and socially. Healing the Futureoffers research and processes to help create a positive future for our children and us by living as human beings should live, according to the book’s description. The book is among several described in the parish’s June 29 bulletin.

The Holy Longing: The Search for Christian Spirituality by Fr. Ronald Rolheiser, OMI, (Image, 1999) is recommended by Andrew Reitz, OFM, pastor of St. Francis Parish, New York City. The Holy Longing is a response to the question “What do we do with the fires inside us?” “Fr. Ronald writes about the various stumbling blocks that prevent us from developing a deeper spirituality and having a stronger spiritual life,” said Andrew. “He says that ‘God is not just in heaven, God is also on earth.’” One reviewer remarks that Fr. Ronald “gives us a bold and thought-provoking meditation on the concrete implications of incarnational spirituality.”

The HNP Communications Office welcomes emails from readers who would like to suggest a book or periodical. Themes that are relevant to friars and partners-in-ministry — in addition to spirituality and news of the Catholic Church — include topics related to the Province’s committees and directorates: evangelization, vocations, justice and peace, wellness, African-American and Hispanic ministries, and young adults.
