NEW YORK — Several books about a variety of topics have been suggested as resources that may interest newsletter readers. HNP Today occasionally provides recommendations of publications that are relevant to friars as well as to their partners in ministry.
Below are brief descriptions of two books provided by various sources.
Ask a Franciscan: Answers to Catholic Questions by Fr. Pat McCloskey, OFM, (St. Anthony Messenger Press, 2010) is recommended by St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Midtown Manhattan, which chose the book as its book of the month for November. According to the Nov. 7 parish bulletin, no one knows better what questions Catholics ask about our faith, the church, morality, Scripture and other topics that Fr. Pat, of St. John the Baptist Province, who, for years, has heard people’s questions and responded in his “Ask a Franciscan” column in St. Anthony Messenger magazine. The book is available in the St. Francis Bookstore on West 31st Street, New York.
Full of Grace: Encountering Mary in Faith, Art and Life by Judith Dupre (Random House, 2010) is recommended by Regina Clarkin O’Leary, a spiritual director in Croton, N.Y., who described it as a “wonderful, nourishing book.” by the author of the 2001 book Churches. “With humor, pathos and intelligence, Dupre links events in the life of a modern, divorced mother to occurrences in Mary’s life,” O’Leary said, adding: “The illustrations are beautiful, combining familiar masterpieces with unexpected contemporary images.” The book includes a description of the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels and the Porziuncola in Assisi, Italy.
Every Eye Beholds You: A World Treasury of Prayer edited and annotated by Thomas J. Craughwell (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 1999) is recommended by Marie Farrentino, a parishioner at St. Patrick-St. Anthony Church in Hartford, Conn. Marie posted her recommendation on the Province’s Facebook page, saying Every Eye Beholds You is “one of the best multi-faith books on prayer that I have ever found … wonderful reference tool and an excellent prayer resource.”
The HNP Communications Office welcomes e-mails from readers who would like to suggest a book or periodical and asks that a short description of the material be provided. The themes of these recommendations are, in addition to spirituality and news of the Catholic Church, topics affiliated with Holy Name Province committees and directorates: evangelization, justice and peace, African-American and Hispanic ministries, communications, wellness, and fraternal life.
