Mark Reamer and Steven Patti presented Francis Medals to parishioners Jim and Judy Barton, Richard and Carol Derrenbacher, and Julio De La Rosa.

RALEGH, N.C. — Five members of St. Francis Parish received the HNP Francis Medal in recognition of their generosity and service. Before leaving the parish he served for 19 years, Mark Reamer, OFM, pastor, presented the medals for generosity of service and support, and giving witness to the values and ideas of St. Francis of Assisi. Steven Patti, OFM, the parish’s new pastor, joined Mark in presenting the medals in August.

The recipients were commended for the advice and skills they have given both to the friars and the community.

Jim and Judy Barton, founding members of the parish, have volunteered in various capacities over the past 30 years. Jim visited the sick and fulfilled works of mercy, among other contributions, and Judy held many leadership roles, including serving on the pastoral council. “Together, as a couple, they have been great witnesses of married love within the St. Francis community,” Mark wrote in the Aug. 31 bulletin.

Richard and Carol Derrenbacher, longtime parishioners, have shared their talents in several ways. Richard provided “great leadership when needed,” Mark said, and Carol volunteered “behind the scenes through her natural pastoral care instincts.”

Julio De La Rosa was the first business manager, serving for more than 10 years. De La Rosa, who retired in 2005, has been a trusted adviser to each of the pastors, said Mark. “The Province has benefitted from his wisdom when ministries have been in need of financial guidance.” In addition to serving on the parish’s finance council for more than two decades, he was a retreat leader.

Earlier this year, Francis Medals were presented at St. Mary’s Parish in Obernburg, N.Y., and in New York City to employees of St. Anthony’s Guild.
