Oct. 7, 2012 — The Franciscan Chapel Center in Tokyo celebrated its 45th anniversary with several Francis week events.
Oct. 11, 2012 — Siena College celebrated its diamond jubilee during its annual Festa Vino, a food and wine festival.
Oct. 17, 2012 — Fr. Melvin Jurisich, OFM, of St. Barbara Province, was nominated General Visitor for HNP by the OFM General Definitorium. (Fr. Mel is currently traveling to ministries throughout the Province is meeting with friars as preparation for the June 2014 Chapter.)
Oct. 29, 2012 — Hurricane Sandy made landfall in the United States, causing damage to several of the Province’s ministries, including St. Francis of Assisi Church on Long Beach Island, N.J., which experienced severe flooding. (The church reopened on June 14, nearly eight months after the storm damaged the structure and much of the surrounding area.)

Oct. 17, 2008 — Kevin Mackin, OFM, was inaugurated as the fifth president of Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, N.Y. — the school’s first Franciscan leader.
10 Years Ago
Oct. 16-21, 2003 — As president of the Bishops’ Conference of Puerto Rico, Archbishop Roberto González, OFM,of San Juan, Puerto Rico, participated in ceremonies marking the 25th anniversary of Pope John Paul II as the bishop of Rome. (Last week, Archbishop Gonzalez celebrated his 25th anniversary of ordination as bishop. Provincial Minister John O’Connor, OFM, traveled to San Juan for the occasion.)
20 Years Ago
Oct. 10, 1993 — Holy Name of Jesus Parish in New York City celebrated its 125th anniversary. (Last year, the parish marked the anniversary of its Franciscan Community Center.)
Oct. 25-28, 1993 — Numerous events celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Washington Theological Union were held in Silver Spring, Md. (In 2012, the school announced it would be closing the following year. Jeffery Jordan, OFM, was a member of the WTU’s final graduating class.)
30 Years Ago
Oct. 2, 1983 — Our Lady of Holy Angels Parish, Little Falls, N.J., celebrated the 100th anniversary of its founding. (The Franciscans withdrew from the parish in 2008.)
Oct. 30, 1983 — St. George’s Parish, Jeffersonville, N.Y., celebrated the 140th anniversary of its founding as a parish. (The Province returned care of the parish to the Archdiocese of New York in 2003.)
