One Year Ago
Aug. 2, 2013 — Dennis Bennett, OFM, Casey Cole, OFM, Edgardo Jara Araya, OFM, and Ramon Razon, OFM, were among 13 novices from seven North American provinces who professed first vows at the Franciscan Interprovincial Novitiate in Burlington, Wis. (Abraham Joseph, OFM, is professing first vows Aug. 2.)

Aug. 24, 2013 — John Aherne, OFM, George Camacho, OFM, Gerald Hopeck, OFM, Jacek Orzechowski, OFM, and Ramon Razon, OFM, joined tens of thousands of people who gathered in Washington to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Edward Flanagan, OFM, and Roy Gasnick, OFM, shared their memories of participating in the 1963 march.

Aug. 26, 2013 — The Province welcomed its largest class of postulants in more than a decade, with eight men comprising the class. (On Aug. 15, Daniel Beckham, Javier Del Angel De Los Santos, Abel Garcia and Christian Seno will enter the Franciscan Interprovincial Novitiate.)

Aug. 22, 2009 — Lawrence Anderson, OFM, Fred Dilger, OFM, and Juan de la Cruz Turcios, OFM, professed solemn vows at St. Francis of Assisi Church in New York City. (Ross Chamberland, OFM, Jeffery Jordan, OFM, and Michael Reyes, OFM, will make their solemn profession on Aug. 23 at the same church.)

Aug. 29, 2004 — St. Mary’s Parish in Obernburg, N.Y., observed its 150th anniversary, with Cardinal Edward Egan serving as principal celebrant and homilist. Provincial Minister John Felice, OFM, pastor John Richardson, OFM, and John McVean, OFM, and Bernard Creighton, OFM, concelebrated. (After serving at St. Mary’s for more than 114 years, the Province withdrew from the parish this June.)

30 Years Ago
Aug. 26, 1984 — A newly installed historical marker on the exterior of the rebuilt Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Atlanta was dedicated by Archbishop Thomas Donnellan. (The Province ministered at the shrine from 1959 to 1987.)
