NEW YORK — At a time that might seem bleak for the economy and job-hunting, two professional development opportunities in New York City are being offered — one for the unemployed, and another for those just beginning a professional career.
For those struggling to find employment in the metropolitan New York area, St. Francis of Assisi Church has formed the Job Seekers Outreach Ministry, led by volunteer David Twomey.
Support Services
The ministry is offering its second series of weekly meetings to offer encouragement and support for job seekers. Feedback from the first session was overwhelmingly positive, according to Twomey. One participant noted: “Because of our group discussion and the accountability factor, I was motivated to be more aggressive and set a clear goal and a plan to achieve it. I have made tremendous progress.”
Information on how to join this group, whose first meeting is May 12, can be found on the ministry’s flyer.
Summer Experience
While encouragement and accountability might be helpful for those who aren’t new to the workforce, for those in college or just graduating, adding experience to a resume is key.
The Holy Name Province Communications Office is seeking a summer intern. Applicants should have strong writing and editing skills as well as an interest or familiarity with design.
“The college students who have worked for our office in past summers have seemed to appreciate the valuable experience they gained and enjoy all of the duties they were given,” said communications director Jocelyn Thomas.
Details about the full-time internship at the Provincial Office in Midtown Manhattan can be found on an informational flyer. Resumes are requested before May 1.
