QUINCY, Mass. — Two of Holy Name’s postulants began the new year working with two pre-novices from the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary at a Boston-area shelter for young pregnant women and single-parent mothers.
On New Year’s Day, postulants Scott Carey, OFM, Michael Reyes, OFM, and Postulant Director John Maganzini, OFM, were accompanied by Franciscan Missionary of Mary pre-Novices Kyong Ha-Yim and Thuy Nguyen, helping the Friends of the Unborn cook New Year’s dinner.
Friends of the Unborn , a shelter for pregnant women and young mothers located in Quincy, is Scott’s ministry site.
The HNP postulants shopped for the ingredients to make a Spanish meal, according to John.
Throughout the morning, the postulants and the women prepared food, set the table, and talked. The postulants especially enjoyed the opportunity to play with the children, according to John. Once the meal was ready, Marilyn Birnie, shelter executive director, joined the group.
Scott greeted everyone and began the meal with prayer. John said that he heard Birnie say, “This is not a specificly Franciscan ministry site, but today it is very Franciscan.”
