Postulant Year Concludes in Boston

BOSTON — Earlier this month, the Province’s three postulants completed their year of discernment at St. Anthony Shrine. A May 8 dinner held in their honor marked the end of their year as well as the close of the Holy Name  postulant program being based in Boston.

Provincial Vicar Dominic Monti, OFM, said, “We are grateful to the friars at Arch Street — especially John Maganzini, OFM, and John Hogan, OFM — for working with our postulants for the past two years.”

The program will move to Wilmington, Del., and will be under the direction of Ronald Pecci, OFM, who had supervised the HNP postulant program several years earlier. The Province’s novitiate year, previously based in Wilmington, will now be a collaborative effort with five Franciscan provinces — Assumption BVM, Christ the King, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Sacred Heart and St. John the Baptist — and will be based in Cedar Lake, Ind.

“A combined novitiate will no doubt add to the richness and diversity of this important year,” wrote vocation director Brian Smail, OFM, in a recent post on the blog “Be A Franciscan.”

During the discernment process, postulants George Camacho, A.J. La Point and Brian Taberski worked with friars from the Boston community in a variety of ministries including a senior computer lab, a geriatric psychiatric unit, senior exercise pograms and Project Hope, an organization that assists women, many of whom are single mothers, to earn a high school diploma.

The postulants said they found their experiences this year interesting and rewarding, expressing gratitude for having the time to learn more about their faith and incorporate it into daily life.

“This year, I have become more reflective in regards to my life and God’s role within it,” George said.

The Province’s affiliation of postulants for the 2010 to 2011 year will be held in August. The new postulants will report to Wilmington and then travel to St. Bonaventure University for five weeks.
