ROME — Two Franciscan friars, both from South America, were named bishops earlier this month by Pope Benedict XVI.

Fr. Roberto Bordi, OFM, 66, of the Franciscan Province of San Antonio, Bolivia, was appointed auxiliary bishop of the Apostolic Vicariate of El Beni on Nov. 6. Fr. Jaime Spengler, OFM, of the Franciscan province of Immaculate Conception, Brazil, was appointed on Nov. 10 auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Porto Alegre in Brazil.

In September, the first Franciscan bishop of South Korea was consecrated. Two Holy Name Province friars — Jerome Massimino, OFM, and Vincent Laviano, OFM, attended the Mass for Bishop Francis Xavier Yu, OFM, in Seoul.
