Poor Clares Recovering from Accident

Sister Mary Cecilia Keyser Franciscan World

On May 6, four sisters from the Wappingers Falls Poor Clare Community were in a car accident. The accident occurred as they came off the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge on their way to a solemn profession at the Chesterfield monastery.

Sister Lucy Houston was flown to St. Francis Trauma Center, Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Sister Gabriel Foster was flown to Westchester Medical Center, Valhalla, N.Y., and Sister Philippa O’Connor and Sister Regina Dierson were taken to St. Luke’s Hospital, Newburgh, N.Y.

After a month of anguish and pain, the sisters are happy to report that Sister Lucy is now at Ferncliff Nursing Home, recuperating from broken bones and undergoing rehab. Sister Gabriel had two surgeries for a broken neck and is now off the respirator and hopefully will graduate to physical therapy. Sister Philippa’s leg is mending at home, and Sister Regina, the driver, who suffered emotional trauma, is doing better.

Each and every sister wants to thank everyone for his or her prayers and support.
