NEW YORK – On Jan. 16, Holy Name Church on 96th Street sponsored the fourth annual March for Peace. The crowd was estimated at between 300 and 350.
As in previous years, we stopped at three houses of worship: West End Presbyterian Church, Ascension Catholic Church, and Anshe Chesed Synagogue before returning to Holy Name Church for our final ceremonies.
Holy Name Youth Choir led us in singing. Again the Grandmothers Against the War sang their original songs, and our speakers were from a group called The Department of Peace. This group is lobbying to create a cabinet post dedicated to peace. We ended by assembling on the front steps of the church singing “We Shall Overcome.”
On Sunday, Jan. 22, the churches of our area held a Pulpit Swap. Michael Tyson preached at West End Presbyterian Church, and Rev. Leslie Merlin from the Second Presbyterian Church preached here at Holy Name. Roughly eight churches participated, all praying that All May Be One during the Chair of Unity Octave.
