Notable events for the month of August include:
One Year Ago
Aug. 15, 2016 — Thirteen men were received into the Franciscan Interprovincial Novitiate at a ceremony in Burlington, Wis. This year, the novice reception is taking place on Aug. 21 at Old Mission Santa Barbara in California.
Aug. 2, 2016 — Franciscans around the world marked the 800th anniversary of the Pardon of Assisi as well as the Feast of the Portiuncula.
Aug. 27, 2016 — Three friars – John Aherne, OFM, George Camacho, OFM, and Edgardo Jara, OFM – professed their final vows as Franciscans at a Mass at St. Francis of Assisi Church in New York City. In February, Edgardo was ordained to the priesthood and, in June, John was ordained a deacon.
Five Years Ago
Aug. 15, 2012 — Four HNP members were among the 16 men who were received at the Interprovincial Novitiate in Wisconsin. They were Dennis Bennett, OFM, and Edgardo Jara, OFM, along with Casey Cole, OFM, and Ramon Razon, OFM, who are preparing to profess their final vows this month.
Aug. 25, 2012 — Three friars – Frank Critch, OFM, Mario Gómez, OFM, and Edgardo Zea, OFM – professed their solemn vows.
Aug 5-10, 2012 — Friars from North America and Europe involved in the ministry of initial formation gathered at the Franciscan Retreat Center for a special congress that was one of a series of “continental congresses” mandated by the General Chapter of the Order in 2009 to assess the state of initial formation throughout the Order. Then-Provincial vicar Dominic Monti, OFM, was among the organizers.
Ten Years Ago
Aug. 10, 2007 – Members of two classes of St. Joseph’s Seminary in Callicoon, N.Y ., gathered for a reunion in New Brunswick, N.J.
Aug. 5, 2007 — The friars of St. Francis of Assisi Friary in New York City gathered for a celebration in honor of John O’Connor, OFM, and John Felice, OFM. The evening was “a thank you to the two provincial ministers who made the dream of a new friary on West 31st Street a reality.”
15 Years Ago
Aug. 5, 2002 — Charles Miller, OFM, then Provincial Vicar, received nine men as postulants. The group included Kyle Haden, OFM, Linh Hoang, OFM, Hugh Macsherry, OFM, Stephen Mimnaugh, OFM, and Juan Turcios, OFM.
25 Years Ago
Aug. 1, 1992 — A new campus ministry house, the Thea House – in honor of the late Thea Bowman, OSF – was opened at Bennett College in Greensboro, N.C.
Aug. 6-10, 1992 — Thirty HNP friars were among 400 Franciscans from North America who participated in a Franciscan Symposium in Denver, Colo.
35 Years Ago
Aug. 16-20, 1982 — 150 friars from various places and groups took part in a Formation Jamboree at Siena College.
