Maria Hayes Features

Some notable September events around Holy Name Province include:

One Year Ago
Sept. 2013 — St. Bonaventure University and Siena College expanded their campuses with the addition of new, state-of-the art buildings. Friars blessed the facilities at the beginning of the school year.

Sept. 15, 2013 — The “Tailor Shop,” a conference room at St. Bonaventure Church in Paterson, N.J., was rededicated in honor of Juniper Capece, OFM, who died in 2012. (When the novitiate was in Paterson, friars made habits in that room. Juniper, who tailored habits throughout his life, had been apprenticed there.)

Five Years Ago
Sept. 5, 2009 — Lawrence Anderson, OFM, and David Phan, OFM, were ordained deacons at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington. Both were ordained to the priesthood in May 2010. (Ross Chamberland, OFM, and Jeffery Jordan, OFM, were ordained deacons on Aug. 28 at St. Augustine Chapel in South Boston, Mass. They will be ordained to the priesthood in January at St. Anthony Shrine, Boston.)

Sept. 27, 2009 — Provincial Minister John O’Connor, OFM, and Ignatius Smith, OFM, pastor of Holy Cross Church in Callicoon, N.Y., celebrated the 100th anniversary of St. Francis Church in Youngsville, N.Y., staffed until 2003. The Sullivan County parish was returned to the Archdiocese of New York.

Sept. 12, 2004 — St. Anthony Shrine dedicated the Fr. Mychal Judge Center for Recovery following a week of remembrance of the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. (The center continues to offer group and individual outpatient substance abuse counseling, educational services, family counseling and support services for adult children and children of persons with substance abuse/dependence problems, among other programs.)

Sept. 10, 1994 — Bishop Edward Head of Buffalo, N.Y., presided at an Anniversary Mass commemorating 75 years of St. Rita’s Parish and 140 years of St. Patrick’s. The two parishes merged in 1981. An additional merger with four other parishes in the Southeast Buffalo Vicariate occurred in 2007, resulting in the creation of St. Clare Parish. (Friars stationed in Buffalo still reside at St. Patrick Friary, in use since 1858. The friary recently created a Facebook page for the community.)

Sept. 29, 1964 — One year after an accident in which seven boys from St. Patrick Friary’s Catholic Youth Organization drowned, the Buffalo friary celebrated a solemn requiem Mass for them.
