Oct. 27, 2011 — The Province commemorated the 25th anniversary of the Spirit of Assisi, also known as the World Day of Prayer for Peace. (HNP’s Office of Justice, Peace and Integrity for Creation has distributed a flyer about this year’s event.)
Five Years Ago
Oct. 1, 2007 — Kevin Mullen, OFM, was inaugurated as Siena’s 10th president. (This year, Kevin and the Siena community are celebrating the Loudonville school’s 75th anniversary.)
Oct. 7, 2007 — The Carnevale Center — named for former pastor Michael Carnevale, OFM — was opened at St. Mary’s Parish in Pompton Lakes, N.J., according to a HNP Today article. It was designed for formation programs and meetings, as well as special events. (This year on the anniversary of the center’s opening, the building hosted a Franciscan College Information Evening for high school students who might be interested in attending Siena College or St. Bonaventure University.)

Oct. 24, 2002 — Dominic Monti, OFM, was selected as the Province’s additional delegate to the 2003 General Chapter in Assisi, with Charles Finnegan, OFM, as the alternate delegate. (In 2010, Dominic was appointed general visitor of Assumption BVM Province.)
Oct. 13, 2002 — The St. Francis Community Center in Brant Beach, N.J., celebrated the 30th anniversary of the 18 Mile Run, sponsored by the Center in conjunction with the Jewish Community Center. 900 runners ran from the southernmost section of the island to the northernmost town on the island. (This year, the 40th run took place on Oct. 7.)

Oct. 3, 1992 — A rededication Mass was celebrated at the Church of St. Francis of Assisi in New York City, marking the 100th anniversary of the present church building.
Oct. 4, 1992 — St. Francis of Assisi Church in Triangle, Va., marked its 35th anniversary with a jubilee Mass.
Oct. 25, 1992 — Friars in Sullivan County, together with Cardinal John O’Connor of New York, celebrated 100 years of service of the friars in Sullivan County at St. Francis Xavier Church in Narrowsburg, N.Y. See photo behind above. (This summer, the Narrowsburg community commemorated the 150th anniversary of St. Francis Xavier Parish.)
25 Years Ago
Oct. 16-19, 1987 — Siena College celebrated its golden jubilee. (This year, the college is celebrating its diamond jubilee during its annual Festa Vino on Oct. 11.)
30 Years Ago
Oct. 4-11, 1982 — The 800th anniversary celebration of the birth of St. Francis was brought to a close throughout the Province and the world. (This year, the Poor Clares celebrated the 800th anniversary of the founding of their Order.)
Oct. 8, 1982 — Christ the King Seminary in East Aurora, N.Y., began a yearlong celebration of its 125th anniversary with an academic convocation, at which Juvenal Lalor, OFM, former seminary rector, received an honorary degree.
50 Years Ago
Oct. 8, 1962 — The opening of the Second Vatican Council was highlighted at St. Francis of Assisi Church in New York City by a series of sermons and prayers given by James Linehan, OFM, Alfred Martin, OFM, Theodore McNally, OFM, LaSalle O’Friel, OFM, and Lambert Zaleha, OFM.
