NEW YORK — As a new year begins, the friars of Holy Name Province bid farewell to 2009, remembering the many celebratory events held in commemoration of the Order’s 800th anniversary as well as the friars who died.

From January 2009, when the history of the Franciscans was published by Provincial Vicar Dominic Monti, OFM, to the Order’s Chapter of Mats and General Chapter in Assisi, Italy, and the celebrations and programs in October for the feast of St. Francis, the friars commemorated this important year in both traditional and special ways.

At this time, the Province also congratulates the 43 friars who are celebrating anniversaries in 2010. They are:

The Province will recognize the silver and golden jubilarians of profession at its annual celebration in June at St. Francis of Assisi Church in New York. Other anniversaries are traditionally arranged by the classes themselves or celebrated locally.

In Memoriam
As this new year begins, the Province remembers the nine friars who died in 2009. They are:

· Thomas Sullivan, OFM, 78, died Feb. 18 in Wayne, N.J.
· John Piccione, OFM, 44, died Feb. 22 in New York
· Callistus Bamberg, OFM, 74, died March 12 in Boston
· Evan Banks, OFM, 85, died March 21 in Ringwood, N.J.
· Laurence Rainville, OFM, 89, died April 3 in Ringwood
· Justin Bailey, OFM, 75, died July 4 in St. Petersburg, Fla.
· Raymond Beach, OFM, 91, died Sept. 14 in Totowa, N.J.
· Thaddeus Sapio, OFM, 71, died Sept. 17 in Anderson, S.C.
· Rosario Veiria, OFM, 85, died Dec. 22 in Ringwood

The Province wishes its partners-in-ministry a new year filled with hopes, dreams and peace.
