NEW YORK — St. Francis of Assisi Church here is sponsoring a free six-week lunchtime support group for adult children grieving the loss of a parent. The first session is April 20.
These weekly sessions will help guide participants through the grieving process in a safe and supportive environment. The group will also provide an opportunity to share with others who are grieving, according to staff member Marie Harrington, who has organized programs like these at the Midtown parish for nearly eight years.
Each meeting will include prayer, personal sharing and discussion of the following topics:
· Grieving the death of your parent; sharing your experiences
· The five tasks of grief work
· Walking with God through grief and loss
· Understanding the intense emotional reactions and feelings after death of a parent
· Reclaiming your life and focus
“The program will give individuals the opportunity to understand the complex grief issues involved with the loss of a parent or becoming a midlife orphan, if both parents are now deceased,” said Harrington.
The group will meet every Tuesday through May 18 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at St. Francis House, 135 West 31st Street. Pre-registration and a brief conversation with Harrington are required before April 16. For more information or to register, call 212-736-8500, ext. 354.
