Major Transition Announced for Friars’ Ministry in Providence

As a result of discussions that have taken place over the past several months between the Province and the Diocese of Providence, the friars’ ministry there will be entering a major transition. Frank Sevola, guardian and director of St. Francis Chapel and Ministry Center, made the announcement during liturgies at the Chapel this past weekend.

The present Weybosset Street building has been sold to a development firm, and in June the Province will assume the pastoral care of nearby St. Mary Parish. The new owners of the Weybosset Street property will
allow the friars to lease back the current chapel facilities for weekday Masses and confessions. But St. Mary’s will provide a larger space for the weekend worshipping community that has formed at the chapel over the years, as well as offices for the Center staff and a residence for the friars.

There will be more details on these exciting developments in next week’s HNP Today.
