35th Anniversary of Francis as the Patron Saint of Ecology
2014 marks the 35th anniversary of the naming of St. Francis of Assisi as Patron of Ecology. To commemorate the event, “Romans VI,” a group of Franciscan JPIC animators, created the website, Franciscans for Ecology. The site was designed to offer resources to help people around the world celebrate this anniversary, especially in the context of the worldwide environmental crisis.
Resources are available in various languages, and include a reflection on the anniversary, Pope John Paul II’s declaration naming Francis the patron of ecology, a Eucharistic celebration, an ecumenical prayer, norms for an interreligious celebration, a Mayan Cross Prayer, Prayers of the Faithful and an article on Franciscan Spirituality.
While the official date commemorating the Pope’s proclamation is Nov. 29, Holy Name Province ministries are invited to prepare events/prayers/gatherings to mark the 35th anniversary at times most convenient to them and their partners. Some may wish to link their celebration with that of the Spirit of Assisi, marked annually on October 28.
Ministries are encouraged to share news of their commemorations with the OFM Office for Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation in Rome, with a short article and a few pictures (please include reference to your city or region).
We at the Holy Name Province JPIC Office join the Rome Office in thanking you for your efforts to help to promote among all people a spirit of care for creation in the spirit of St. Francis.
