Interprovincial Retreat to Feature Michael Blastic

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Friars are invited to the 2009 Inter-Provincial Retreat planned for Jan. 12 to 19 at Holy Cross Retreat House here. The theme, “800th Anniversary: Our Life and Rule 1209-2009,” will focus on commitments and practices that identify Franciscans, according to a promotional flyer distributed to all OFM provinces.

Michael Blastic, OFM, an associate professor at the Franciscan Institute at St. Bonaventure University, will present his reflections on the Rule of 1223 for the 21st century at the retreat. He teaches courses on Franciscan hagiography, theological tradition, preaching, and philosophy.

The author of Study of the Rule of 1223: History, Exegisis, and Reflection, Michael is a recognized expert on the Rule of St. Francis.  He has lectured throughout the United States, Canada, India, Australia, Africa and the Philippines.

In his presentation, Michael will cover themes including “Commitments and Practices that Identify Us a Franciscan,”  “How the Rule Affects Our Lives 800 Years After its Approval,” and “Going Around the World with Our Franciscan Life and Rule.”

The retreat is being sponsored by the provinces of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Sacred Heart and St. John the Baptist.

Holy Cross Retreat House is 45 miles from the El Paso, Texas, airport.  Registration is being accepted until Dec. 26.
