NEW YORK — Fr. Robert Campagna, OFM, Provincial Minister of Immaculate Conception Province here, issued a pastoral letter earlier this month to inaugurate the province’s year-long celebration of its centenary. IC was canonically erected as a province on Dec. 25, 1910; it had been established as a custody in 1861.
The letter can be read in the Jan. 9, 2010, issue of NEWS of the Immaculate Conception Province, a weekly newsletter. The province is compiling a calendar of centenary observances.
A biography of Fr. Pamfilo da Magliano, OFM, founder of IC, is also included in the Jan. 9 issue. Fr. Pamfilo, shown in photo, was instrumental in founding St. Bonaventure University, Allegany, N.Y.
In other IC Province news, Fr. Vit Fiala, OFM, released “Serenade & Variations: Pieces for cello and piano,” a collaboration with pianist Amy Vinisko. The Dec. 18, 2009, issue of NEWS reported: “Entering religious life with (IC) Province in 1991, Vit wondered if he would ever use his musical gifts again. Today, Fr. Vit has embared on a schedule of concerts in Ohio, Connecticut and Florida that he uses as an opportunity to share beautiful music as well as to raise money for the Franciscan Missionary Union of (IC) Province.”
Archived issues of NEWS are available on the province’s Web site.
Editor’s note: The spelling of Fr. Pamfilo’s name varies. Some communities and organizations use “Panfilo” or “Pamphilus”; however, based on historical documents written by Fr. Pamfilo and used for ‘Peace and Good’ in America by Joseph White, Holy Name Province prefers the spelling “Pamfilo.”
