SADDLE RIVER, N.J.-Twenty four classmates of the late Bishop John Burke at St. Cecilia High School, Englewood, N.J., gathered for their 54th reunion celebration on May 24 at Villa Marie Claire here.
John died unexpectedly on March 14 this year in Brazil, where he had led the Diocese of Miracema do Tocantins for the past 11 years.
“John was the glue, so to speak, that kept us coming together year after year,” said Frank Stein, reunion chairperson. “He was our class president, and an outstanding student. We carry so many fond memories of him.”
The reunion began at 11:30 a.m. with Mass in the Villa’s chapel celebrated byCassian Miles, an ordination classmate of John. Cassian continued the “classmate theme” by noting in his homily several celebrities who had “graduated” with John on that same date to their final place of rest.
The group then gathered at the Ho-Ho-Kus Inn for a luncheon, after which several classmates shared stories about their activities over the past year.
