Richard Flaherty, OFM, and Daniel Murray, OFM, who commemorated their 50th anniversary of first profession of vows last month, have the distinction this month of being the most senior friars celebrating June birthdays – Richard his 81st on June 24, and Daniel his milestone 80th on June 29. The youngest friar among the 15 with birthdays this month is James Kernan, OFM, who professed his first vows two years ago at the interprovincial novitiate at Old Mission Santa Barbara in California, his 25th on June 11.
There is an entire group of septuagenarians among this month’s birthday friars. They include James Patrick Kelly, OFM, who celebrated his 79th on June 13; Roberto Gonzalez, OFM, the archbishop of the Archdiocese of San Juan, Puerto Rico, who presided at the recent ordination Mass of three HNP friars at St. Camillus Church in Silver Spring, Maryland, his 73rd on June 2; Kevin Daly, OFM, a pastoral associate at St. Francis of Assisi in Long Beach Island, New Jersey, his 71st on June 17; and a trio celebrating their milestone 70th birthdays – Robert Sandoz, OFM, who works in student academic success and engagement at Siena College, on June 1, Dennis Tamburello, OFM, a professor of religious studies at Siena College, on June 9, and Joseph Quinn, OFM, director of grief and LGBTQ ministries at St. Anthony Shrine in Boston, on June 20.
Rounding out the calendar of June birthdays are Brian Smail, OFM, who works in the Development Office on 31st Street, his 69th on June 17; Sean O’Brien, OFM, director of the mentoring program at Siena College, his 62nd on June 25; Kevin Kriso, OFM, who is stationed at Mt. Irenaeus, the Franciscan mountain retreat near St. Bonaventure University, his 61st on June 4; Kevin McGoff, OFM, who edits the SAR Directorate video series, Aging with Grace, his 59th on June 28; William McIntyre, OFM, pastor of St. Peter Claver Church in Macon, Georgia, his 58th on June 22, and James Bernard, OFM, who was ordained to the priesthood in April and is serving in pastoral ministry at St. Anthony of Padua Parish in Butler, New Jersey, his 57th on June 30.
