WASHINGTON — The Washington Theological Union held its 42nd graduation ceremony on May 6 at Trinity Washington University. Among the 32 graduates were Holy Name friars Walter Liss, OFM, and Erick Lopez, OFM.
Erick (on left in photo), who will be ordained May 21 in New York, received a master of divinity degree. Walter, based at Siena College in Upstate New York, received a master’s degree in theological studies.
The graduation address was given by W. Shepherson Abell, finance council member of the Archdiocese of Washington. The Vincent Cushing Award, named after former president Vincent de Paul Cushing, OFM, was awarded to graduate Joseph Mazawi.
WTU’s valedictorian address was given by Michael Castrilli, OSFS, who facilitated Holy Name Province’s parish administration workshop in April.
On May 14, Mario Gomez, OFM, received a bachelor’s degree from The Catholic University of America. A group of friars from Holy Name College in Silver Spring, Md., where he has been living this past year, and from Wilmington, Del., attended the commencement ceremony.
