Friars, Friends Gather to Commemorate SBU’s Long History

HNP Communications Around the Province

ALLEGANY, N.Y. — The extended family of St. Bonaventure University here is commemorating the 150th anniversary of the school’s founding with a six-week series of Universal Bonaventure Celebrations (UBC). The program begins tonight in Rochester, N.Y., and continues through Nov. 20, with an event in Erie, Pa.

Participating in the events will be representatives of the SBU community — friars, alumni, students, parents, administrators, and members of the board of trustees. The UBC was organized through members of SBU’s alumni association. It is being directed by Jerry Ford, SBU ’62, who suggested the program last year while a member of the National Alumni Association Board. He is working with SBU’s alumni office, as well as a group of volunteer alumni.

Twenty celebrations are being held from Florida to New England. Each UBC event will include presentation of a video about the university’s history, a campus update, brief speeches, and fellowship and refreshments.

University President Sr. Margaret Carney, OSF, will attend  a UBC in Stamford, Conn., on Oct. 11. It is one of two UBCs planned for this week in the metropolitan New York area.  The other is Oct. 9, with a Mass at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Midtown Manhattan, celebrated by Daniel Riley, OFM, SBU ’64, followed by a reception.

Information about the Universal Bonaventure Celebration is available on the alumni page of SBU’s Web site. Registration can be done online.
