► F. Edward Coughlin, OFM made a presentation to the St. Bonaventure board of trustees about the university’s 150th anniversary pilgrimage abroad, May 22 to June 2. He and Sr. Margaret Carney, OSF, St. Bonaventure president, were two of the four leaders of a trip to Ireland and Italy. Edward’s presentation combined photos, text and music of some of the many places that the pilgrims visited, including Dublin, Davidstown and Wexford, Ireland; and Rome, Magliano, Bagnoregio, and Assisi, Italy.
► Octavio Duran, OFM, and Provincial Secretary Michael Harlan, OFM, appear in a photograph in the June 2008 issue of St. Anthony Messenger. It was taken outside St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Fifth Avenue, Manhattan, on April 19 before the papal Mass. Pictured with them on Page 28 is a friar from Croatia. John Feister, writer of the article, titled “Actions Speak Louder Than Words; The Pope in New York,” wrote, “Well before 7 a.m., I encounter several OFM friars from Manhattan-based Holy Name Province.”
► Former Provincial Minister John Felice, OFM, returned home to New York on June 18 after spending a month in a hospital near Florence, Italy. He and John McVean, OFM, were on vacation in Italy, when he fell ill with a severe case of pancreatitis. John, who is regaining his strength, said he was very happy to receive the warm friar welcome both at the airport and at the West 31st Street friary.
► Daniel Grigassy, OFM, pastor of St. Bonaventure Church in Paterson, N.J., preached a retreat for the Capuchin friars of the St. Augustine Province of Pittsburgh, at San Alfonso Retreat House, Long Branch, N.J., from May 19 to 23.
► Thomas Hartle, OFM, attended the official presentation of the Star School Awards at DePaul High School in Wayne, N.J., on June 12. Thomas said Principal Felicia Goodness “has done much along with our very dedicated staff of teachers and aides.” Details about the Star School awards appeared in the last issue of HNP Today.
► In honor of the 50th anniversary of the ordination of Howard O’Shea, OFM, his cousin, a horse-breeder, has named his latest colt, Billy O’Shea, Howard’s baptismal name. “I will baptize him as soon as he reaches the age of reason,” laughed Howard.
► Daniel Sulmasy, OFM, spoke June 24 at a lunch meeting of the Serra Club of the Bronx and Westchester. Dan is professor of medicine and director of the Bioethics Institute at New York Medical College in Valhalla, N.Y.
► Patrick Tuttle, OFM, was one of several friars who participated in the June 19 gathering at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Greenville, S.C., to celebrate Juneteenth, recognition of the last emancipated slaves in Galveston, Texas.
► William “Jud” Weiksnar, OFM, pastor, and others from St. Anthony Church in Camden, N.J., participated in the fourth annual Camden Prayer Walk on June 22. Details will be provided in a future issue of HNP Today.
