NEW YORK — Provincial Minister John O’Connor, OFM, has announced that Fr. Fred Link, OFM, former provincial minister of St. John the Baptist Province, has been chosen by the General Minister and the General Definitorium to perform the canonical visitation of the Province to prepare for the Chapter to be held in January 2011. He will begin his work in the early part of 2010.

About Fr. Fred
Fr. Fred was born in Cincinnati and has been a professed member of St. John the Baptist Province, based in Cincinnati, since 1962. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1970.

He has bachelor’s degrees in philosophy and liturgical music from Duns Scotus College, Southfield, Mich., and Saint Joseph’s College, Rensselaer, Ind., respectively. Fr. Fred also holds a master’s in theology from University of Dayton, Ohio, and a master’s in education from Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind.

Fr. Fred spent many years working with young people, including as instructor in music and religion at Bishop Luers High School in Ft. Wayne, Ind., and Roger Bacon High School in Cincinnati. He also served as principal of Bishop Luers for six years.

In 1987, Fr. Fred was elected to serve on the provincial council of St. John the Baptist Province. In 1999, he became provincial minister, serving until last year.

He is currently a member of St. Bonaventure University’s board of trustees. Fr. Fred spent a sabbatical year at the Allegany, N.Y., university from 2008 to 2009, following his term as provincial.

Visitor’s Role
The role of the visitor is to interview all Holy Name Province friars to see how they are doing personally and to get a picture of fraternal life and ministry in the Province as well as uncover any issues that might need attention at the Chapter, said John.

He attends all meetings of the Provincial Council, once he begins his visitation. He also oversees the nominations for Provincial Minister and Provincial Council. Finally, he serves as president of the Provincial Chapter of 2011.

At the end of his visitation and the Chapter, the visitor writes a detailed report on the state of the Province. The last general visitor to Holy Name Province was Fr. Raymond Bucher, OFM, of St. Barbara Province, from 2004 to 2005. Fr. Raymond is now director of the San Damiano Retreat Center in Danville, Calif.
