CHICAGO – The Felician Sisters of the Mother of Good Counsel Province conferred their Felician peace award on Jerry Zawada, OFM, a member of the Assumption Province, during a ceremony on Aug. 12 at their motherhouse here. The sisters gave Jerry a standing ovation to show their appreciation for his witness and actions to promote peace in the world.

Jerry was released from prison Aug. 2, after being arrested during protests against the School of the Americas last November. Jim Hoffman, OFM, reports that Jerry looks “great and healthy.” Jim said, “Jerry told me that the ‘campers’ at Terre Haute began a hunger strike July 30 to protest the way the guards treated them. Jerry was a little fearful that they were going to keep him longer, charging him again with ‘inciting a riot.’ ”

Jim adds, “Jerry says he is going to take it easy for awhile…”
