SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovena — Provincial leaders from Europe met here last month to discuss inter-religious dialogue in Europe focusing on Islam.
According to the Nov. 1 issue of Fraternitas, the eighth general assembly of EFME, the Union of Friars Minor of Europe, gathered Oct. 9 – 14 in the city of the recent Balkan war to allow for “many direct contacts with the local reality.” Sarajevo is a city very dear to the Franciscans living in the Bosnia – Herzegovena since the eighth century, the publication said.
Five professors spoke at the assembly about topics relating to history, culture and theology, General Minister Jose Rodriguz Carballo, OFM, gave a presentation on “Christianity and Islam Today: the Franciscan View.”
Two new leaders were elected during the gathering. They are Vitor Jose Melicias Lopes of Portugal, as UFME president, and Waclaw Chomik of Poland, vice president.
