Deaths in Franciscan Communities

Holy Name Province is mourning the deaths of several friars and Franciscan sisters.

Fr. Larry Brummer, OFM, of Sacred Heart Province, died on Jan. 4 in St. Louis. Funeral services were held in San Antonio.

Fr. Michael Scanlan, TOR, 85, the fourth president of the Franciscan University of Steubenville, died on Jan. 7 in Steubenville, Ohio.

Sr. Catherine Michael Brady, OSF, a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, N.Y., died Jan. 8.

Fr. Ignatius Kelly, OFM, 93, a professed friar of the Custody of the Immaculate Conception, Great Britain, died on Jan. 8 in Littlehampton, England. Fr. Ignatius, who served his custody/province and the Order in various capacities, was General Visitor for Holy Name Province from 1992 to 1993.

Two members of the Ireland Province died this month: Fr. Oswald Gill, OFM, 99, on Jan. 8 and Fr. Peter Baptist O’Toole, OFM, 83, on Jan. 10. Biographical information about the two friars can be found on the province’s website.

Two members of St. Barbara Province have died: Fr. Stephen Tan Nguyen, OFM, 87, on Jan. 17, and Fr. Ervan Beers, OFM, on Jan. 20.

Sr. Phyllis Ann Greco, OSF, 85, a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 60 years, died in Aston, Pa., on Jan. 24. She had ministered primarily in education, social work, and parish ministry.

Sr. Virginia Waters, FSP, 81, also known as Sr. Marita Therese, a member of the Sisters of Peace, died on Jan. 24.

Sr. Bernadette Ann Bozak, OSF, 83, a member of the School Sisters of St. Francis United States Province, died on Jan. 26 in Pittsburgh, Pa.
