Deaths in Franciscan Communities

The Province is mourning the passing of two OFM friars and several Franciscan sisters.

Fr. Matthew Brozovic, OFM, age 85, a member of St. John the Baptist Province, died on Jan. 31 in Milford, Ohio. Biographical information can be found in a story in the Feb. 11 issue of SJB News Notes titled “With Matthew, They Broke the Mold.”

Fr. Rodolfo Hernandez Medrano, OFM, 57, provincial minister of the Mexican Province of Saints Francis and James, died on Feb. 13 in Bogota, Colombia, where he was attending a meeting.

Two members of the Poor Clares in Travelers Rest, S.C. have died. Sr. Joyce Munson, OSC, 82, died on Jan. 30 and Sr. Helen Godfrey, OSC, 77, died Feb. 12.

Sr. Mary Xavier St. John, OSC, a member of the Poor Clares in Jamaica Plain, Mass., died on Feb. 15.

Sr. Kate Murphy, OSF, 98, sister of the late Jude Murphy, OFM, a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, N.Y., died Feb. 18 in Olean, N.Y. A wake is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 26 and a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. on Feb. 27, both at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse Chapel in Allegany, N.Y., where Sr. Kate had lived since 2013.
