Deaths in Franciscan Communities

During recent weeks, several friars and sisters have passed to eternal life.

Fr. Alonso de Blas, OFM, of St. Barbara Province, died March 6. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Mary’s Basilica in Phoenix on March 13. Biographical information about Fr. Alonso was posted on the website of the Franciscan Renewal Center in Scottsdale, Ariz., where he had been stationed since 2009.

Sr. M. Benedicta Reagan, OSC, 91, of the Monastery of St. Clare in Wappingers Falls, N.Y, died March 13.

Two members of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, N.Y., have died: Sr. Marie Rosaire Orvis, OSF, on March 14 and Sr. Mary Laffey, OSF, on March 15.

Fr. Art McCoy, OFM, 74, of the Province of Ireland, died on April 13 in Killucan, Ireland.

Sr. Emily Marie Silveira, OSC, died on April 16 at the Monastery of St. Clare in Andover, Mass. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on April 21 in Andover.

Sr. Carol Ann (formerly Emma Francis) Zurlo, OSF, 78, of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia, died on April 25 in Aston, Pa.

Sr. Liliane Alam, FMM, 67, former director of finance and administration at Holy Name of Jesus Church in New York City and treasurer of Franciscans International, died on April 26. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on April 30 at Holy Name Church.
