Dan McLellan Receives Honorary Degree

EAST AURORA, N.Y. — Daniel McLellan was awarded the degree of doctor of humane letters honoris causa at the 149th commencement exercises of Christ the King Seminary here on May 11. Dan served as rector-president of the seminary from 1987 to 1990, the last Franciscan to hold that position.

In his acceptance address, Dan discussed the public character of the education and service of ordained and lay ministers, according to Gabriel Scarfia,guardian of Christ the King friary who also teaches systematic theology at the seminary. Twelve masters degrees were awarded during the commencement as well as 18 certificates in pastoral studies.

Dan, former president of the Washington Theological Union, is pastor of Immaculate Conception Church in Durham, N.C.

Christ the King Seminary will begin commemorations of its 150th anniversary this fall. The Franciscan tradition of the seminary is being honored, Gabriel said.
