Presbyteral Ordination of Abraham Joseph
JUNE 9, 2020 — Join us for the presbyteral ordination of Br. Abraham Joseph, OFM, at noon EST on June 13 at Holy Name of Jesus Church in Cedar Lake, Indiana. Bishop Robert McClory of the Diocese of Gary, Indiana, will celebrate the Mass. Because of the ongoing pandemic, no guests will be permitted to attend the ordination in person. However, we invite everyone to join us for the livestream, which will be viewable below.
A native of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Abraham came to the United States in 2000 and went on to complete a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Monroe College in the Bronx, N.Y. Prior to entering formation, he worked in the private sector as an accountant at the September 11th Families Association in Manhattan. After completing his postulancy year, he professed his first vows in August 2014 at the Franciscan Interprovincial Novitiate, which was then located in Burlington, Wisconsin.
During his initial formation, Abraham worked in prison ministry in Maryland, as a hospital chaplain in Indiana, and in community organizing with a youth group in New Jersey. He also served at St. Francis Inn, the Province’s soup kitchen in Philadelphia, and completed a year-long internship at Holy Name of Jesus-St. Gregory the Great Parish on West 96th Street in New York City, performing various ministerial duties including liturgy preparation, adult education, administrative tasks, and work with Franciscan justice, peace and integrity of creation. He speaks four languages – English, French, Haitian Creole (Kreyòl ayisyen) and Spanish. He made his solemn profession on Aug 25, 2018 at the Church of St. Francis of Assisi in New York City.
Abraham was ordained to the diaconate on May 21, 2019 in the chapel of the Catholic Theological Union, where he completed his Master of Divinity earlier this year. He will continue to live in Chicago while he finishes his Master of Social Work at Loyola University. He will also be helping at St. Peter’s in the Loop, Chicago, and Holy Name Parish in Cedar Lake.
