We‘ve all heard of the Oscars, the Emmys, the Grammys and the Tonys. But the DeRose-Hinkhouse Awards?
The latter recognize the achievements of members of the Religious Communicators Council who demonstrate excellence as religion communicators. Begun in 1967, the DeRose-Hinkhouse awards are named for the late Victor DeRose and the late Paul M. Hinkhouse, two leading lithographers in New York City and longtime friends of the RCC.
Among the winners of the 2016 DeRose-Hinkhouse Awards were members of Holy Name Province’s Communications Office. In the category “Writing for Publication,” Jocelyn Thomas, director of the HNP Communications Office, and Maria Hayes, communications coordinator , received an Award of Excellence for their story titled “Friars’ Plunge into Potomac Raises Awareness of Climate Change.” In the same category, the HNP Communications Office staff members were awarded a Certificate of Merit for their article “Buffalo Ministries Join Under New Entity.”
Perhaps of even greater prestige and note, Jocelyn and Maria were awarded three 2016 awards from the Catholic Press Association, all in the “Best Feature Article: Newsletter” category. Maria’s Friars’ Plunge article captured first place. It was described by the CPA as “a story on the timely issue of climate change and a religious community’s creative way of advocating for better environmental solutions.” The “Buffalo Ministries” article, also written by Maria, was awarded third place for being “an important story on how a religious community serves the poor in America’s third-poorest city.” And Jocelyn received the second place award for her article titled “Friar Who Donated Body to Science to Be Honored by Med Students.” The CPA described this article as a “compelling story on the courageous choice by an individual that has benefitted many students.”
The Province salutes Jocelyn and Maria for their award-winning work, and extends to them our heartfelt congratulations.
This is not the first time that Maria and Jocelyn have drawn praise for their writing efforts. Just last year, Maria similarly won both first-place and third-place awards, and Jocelyn a second-place award, from the Catholic Press Association in the “Best-Feature Article: Newsletter” category. In addition, the Communications Office received a 2015 De-Rose-Hinkhouse certificate of merit for “Best E-Newsletter: Single Issue.”
